Maureen Moore became a photographer for the right reason: she was passionate about the craft. For as long as she can remember, the Cornwall resident loved taking photos and did it despite criticism from those close to her. “When I started, I was horrible,” she recalled while standing in the middle of an exhibit of her at Cornwall Town Hall. “My family made fun of me.”

Moore stuck with it and about five years ago she got really serious and started going out in search of landscapes and animals to photograph. One of her first projects was a photo book she created called “Gerry The Groundhog Learns about School Bus Safety.” In the book, her photos of groundhogs illustrate the story of how Gerry learned safety rules then sneaked on board to take a bus trip. Moore got the idea as she drove a school bus for West Point Tours.

Moore’s fascination with animals has taken her to some close encounters with some big critters, including black bears that live in the Dingman’s Ferry area where she maintains a vacation retreat. “I follow the bears around Dingman’s Ferry and once saw a female bear take down a bird feeder, then start fighting over it with another bear.” Her photo of a bear next to a welcome sign (seen at right) is typical of the humorous scenes she finds.

In addition to animal photographs, the town hall show includes landscape photography from New York, Arizona and Ireland. One man, who had stopped by town hall with his fiancée to get a marriage license, came to the show and was moved by Moore’s photo of the sunset on the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Staff Sgt. Ryan King said it reminded of his own trip to the Grand Canyon 12 years earlier where the sunset was “the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.”

You can view Maureen Moore’s show at Cornwall Town Hall during business hours through December 27.
