General News: June 2014 Town Board Meeting

June 11, 2014

By Sarah Fulton

Tensions were high as the gavel dropped calling the meeting to order at last night’s Town Board meeting. There were over 30 Cornwall residents in attendance.

The first point on the agenda was to address the Cornwall Garden Club’s issue with signing a Hold Harmless agreement that holds the Garden Club liable for any insurance-related accident that may occur. The women of the Garden Club insured that they were covered with $4 million dollars’ worth of insurance by State Farm, and should not have to individually sign an agreement that could potentially put them in the position of being sued. The Board tried to explain the convoluted situation, but to no avail. As soon as the Board was ready to move away from this issue, most of the attendees left the meeting, assuring that this issue would be re-hashed.

The meeting continued with the resolution portion. They talked of various appraisals and settlements that were occurring throughout the town, putting them to a vote and passing them along. A Black Rock Consortium representative attended, proposing for the trail leading to the Science Center in Black Rock Forest to be improved and made handicap accessible. They also approved this year’s Fall Festival, the Storm King Run and the upcoming children’s event, “Touch-A-Truck.”

The most interesting issue that was addressed was NYMA. It has been an on-going struggle for the school to find appropriate funding, and with the new idea of selling bonds of the school in association with Global Financial Exchange, it seems their problems will only continue. One member of the audience had researched the company, only to find that it is an unknown entity, not registered with the FCC. Anthony Dessin, who spoke at the meeting, held at NYMA earlier that day has a vision of moving forward with the school and re-claiming its success.

The final issue that was addressed in the meeting was the improvements being made on Mill Street after the fire that tore through the development. A code enforcer along with members of the Board went to the site, only to find one contractor and no laborers cleaning up. The Board had already granted an extension to the contractor, and gave a final warning that improvements must be made as soon as possible.
