General News: BOARD OF EDUCATION NEEDS YOUR VOTE

May 20, 2014

This evening’s Board of Education meeting began with the unveiling of Cornwall Central School District’s new motto: “Striving for Excellence Every Day.” It became very clear throughout the meeting that Cornwall’s students, faculty and other community members have succeeded in this endeavor.

Mr. Neal Miller began by revealing the 2013 report card for Cornwall Schools. In ELA and Math standardized testing students in grades 3-8 were rated in the top 20%, putting Cornwall in the top 50 school districts in New York State. For grades 8-12, Cornwall was ranked number 2 for the Regents Exams. These statistics combined set Cornwall at the highest mastery level, leading us to be number 1 in the county.

A run-down of Winter Athletics was presented by Mr. Michael Kroemer, the Athletic Director. All of the winter teams had done exceptionally well in their sports by winning championships, conferences and reaching personal goals. Kroemer finished by announcing that every winter team was commended as Scholar Athlete teams.

The meeting began to draw to a close with a presentation by the Foreign Language teachers at CCHS, along with several of their students. Mrs. Regina Hines began by giving a short itinerary of their trip to Spain. The class traveled from Madrid to Barcelona and then to Paris; a trip that was described as unforgettable. The students in attendance gave a short presentation of pictures they had taken, and gave testimonials that it had been “an experience of a lifetime.” Madame Lynn Mayo followed by speaking of a similar journey with her 36 students who attended the trip to France. She spoke of a word in French, “profiter,” which sounded much like the English version of “profit,” but meant that they had “gained as much as they could from the experience,” rather than meaning a monetary gain. It was evident from the excitement expressed by both the teachers and students about these trips, that they play a pivotal role in the development of Cornwall’s Foreign Language students.

The only future business the Board had to discuss was the School Budget Vote tomorrow. “Look at the results we get,” spoke one member, “we must encourage our neighbors to get out there and support this District.”

Get out and vote Tuesday, May 20th 2014 from 6 AM to 9 PM.
