General News: Phone Book Law On Hold

Phonebooks can pile up in your driveway
Phonebooks can pile up in your driveway

The Yellow Book and the other books will be arriving in your driveway for the foreseeable future as the Village Board of Trustees postponed a vote on the proposed law that would create a registry for residents who don’t want the unsolicited materials.

At the board meeting on Monday evening several residents raised questions about the cost to the village of creating the law, how it would be enforced, and whether the phone book companies would retaliate and force people to come pick up the books themselves.

“I would hate for the law to come back around and bite us,” said resident Andrew Maroney, “The companies could truck in the books to Key Food or wherever and we would have to go pick them up. Nothing in the law says they couldn’t do that.”

Barry Gruber first proposed that the village find a solution to the problem created by the phone books that are regularly dropped into driveways whether residents want them or not. On Monday he asked how the village would enforce the new law.

Howard Protter, the village attorney, said it would be up to the resident to report any unsolicited materials on his or her doorstep.

Mayor Edward Moulton told the meeting that it would cost about $500 to put the law on the books but he cautioned that doing nothing has a cost as well—recycling all those heavy phone books that people don’t want.

After listening to the issues raised by villagers at the hearing on the phone book law, the board of trustees agreed that it would be worthwhile to look further into these issues before putting it to a vote.
