General News: Town Board Addresses Canada Goose Concerns

The Town Board met at Town Hall on Monday night, July 8, for its monthly regular meeting. A large crowd was in attendance, with many members of the public concerned about the way in which the Canada Goose population issue has been handled.
Deputy Supervisor Mary Beth Greene estimated that approximately one dozen individuals spoke on the issue during the public comment portion of the meeting.
In response to the concerns voiced by the public, the Board included an item on the agenda which would permit members of the public interested in serving on the Canada Geese Control Committee to submit a letter of interest to the Supervisor’s office. A follow-up discussion on the issue will take place at the August 6 work session meeting.
The Town reiterated that the letter from the USDA explaining the situation was read at the June work session and regular meetings. In an effort to improve the safety of planes arriving at and departing from nearby Stewart Airport, certain measures have been proposed to decrease the Canada Goose population in the area.
Rings Pond falls within the area designated by the USDA.
Because the letter represents the advice of the federal government, Mary Beth Greene stated that she hopes “the people understand the chain-of-command issue.”
A meeting for the Board to discuss the Cornwall Commons issue has been schedule for July 24, at 7:00 PM. It will be held at Munger Cottage.
The Board also created an account which will permit the Town to collect donations for the Sands Ring Homestead.
The Town wants residents to be aware of the fact that road work will begin to take place during the summer and the fall, and the public should keep this in mind while traveling. The Town has also begun selling EZ Passes through the Town Clerk’s office.
In regard to the Kiryas Joel pipeline, the Town urges the public to remain vigilant on this issue. Phase 1 of the project has moved forward. Phase 2 will be the Cornwall portion. A public hearing on this issue will be scheduled in the future.
