General News: COH and Buckle Up New York

May 09, 2013

from The Cornwall-on-Hudson PD

Between May 20, 2013 and June 02, 2013, the Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y. Police Department will join Law Enforcement across the country in participating in 2013’ Buckle Up New York “BUNY”. This is a two week initiative in making the public aware of seatbelt usage.

Over the years, Buckle Up New York “BUNY”, Click It or Ticket mobilization and dedicated year round seatbelt enforcement have significantly reduced the number of personal injury and fatal crashes. Yet despite these gains, 218 unrestrained occupants died in crashes on New York roads in 2011.

Although seatbelt usage by motorists has increased over the years, there still is more to do and accomplish. The Cornwall-on-Hudson PD wants to help increase seatbelt usage and awareness even further.

Attached to this document are statistical data from the NYS Department of Health, Bureau of Occupational Health and Injury Prevention and the Crash Outcome Data Evaluation System (CODES) pertaining to seatbelt usage.

Thank you in advance for assisting our Police Department in making the Community aware of the importance of seatbelt usage.

Chief Steven E. Dixon

Using Seatbelts Saves Lives, Reduces Injuries, and Saves Money!

  • In 2010, every month an average of 26 motorists in Orange County who did not wear a seatbelt were injured severely enough to require hospital treatment; six of whom sustained injuries serious enough to require inpatient hospitalization.
  • In 2010, 306 motorists in Orange County, who did not wear a seatbelt were treated at a hospital for their injuries.

* Treatment of these injuries resulted in almost $11.8 million in emergency department and hospitalization charges.

*12% (over $1.4 million) of the hospitalization and ED charges was charged to public funds.

  • Among motorists who were involved in a crash, those who were unrestrained were 14 more time likely to require hospitalization than those who buckled up. The resulting average hospital charge is almost $63 thousand higher  for those unrestrained.
  • Unrestrained motorists involved in a crash are almost six times as likely to suffer a traumatic brain injury compared to those wearing a seatbelt.
