General News: Grant to Underwrite Civil War Lecture Series

May 03, 2013

from the Cornwall Public Library

Cornwall Public Library Foundation has been awarded a grant in the amount of $1,800 from the New York Council on the Humanities for the Library’s Civil War Sesquicentennial Lecture Series. The entire amount will be given to Cornwall Public Library to be used to underwrite a continuation of the well-attended series that began in 2012.

The lecture series has been coordinated by Charles LaRocca, a former high school history teacher whose passion for Civil War history lead to him to founding the 124th New York State Volunteer reenactment group as well as authoring a book on the subject. To date there have been eight events in the community room at the library with guest speakers on a wide variety of topics relating to the Civil War. The next two programs are set for May and June. On Monday, May 13th, Mr. LaRocca will present Our Men Fought like Tigers: the 124th New York at the Battle of Chancellorsville. On Wednesday, June 26th reenactor and high school teacher, David Topps will speak on the topic of Timid Youths to Hardened Veterans: the 150th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment at the Battle of Gettysburg.

The Cornwall Public Library Foundation is an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to developing financial resources in support of Cornwall Public Library. This provides special gifts to enhance Library programs and services. For more information about the Cornwall Public Library Foundation and how you can “invest in your library,” e-mail info@cplfoundation, or call Karen LaRocca-Fels, Library Director, at: 534-8282, ext. 201.
