General News: Poetry Contest Awards to Young Poets

Sunday, April 28th will be remembered as a very special day in the lives of several young people whose original poems were named “best” in Cornwall Public Library’s 9th Annual Timothy Mumford Memorial Poetry Competition. Many of the winners were present and read their poems to a most appreciative audience, after which they received their awards during a special ceremony that took place at 3:00 p.m. in the library’s community room. All received a personalized card signed by Karen LaRocca-Fels, Library Director, and a Barnes & Noble gift card. The young lady whose poem was named best overall also received a personal journal in which to continue her creative writing. Following the ceremony everyone enjoyed a reception hosted by the FRIENDS of Cornwall Library.
160 original poems submitted by 113 children and youth ages 5-18 were read and critiqued by three independent judges - John Kelly, Sally Ryan and Sharon Thomson - who had no knowledge of the authors other than their ages. The judges then conferred with one another to arrive at a unanimous decision regarding best poem in each category, and best overall poem.
The 2013 winners are:
Ages 5-6 – Molly Rose Finn, age 6 Poem: “Spring is Near”
Ages 7-8-9 – Kathryn Gagnon, age 9 Poem: “Madness”
Ages 10-11-12 - Elizabeth Klosky, age 12 Poem: “Deforestation”
Age 16 – Owen McTigue, age 16 Poem: “Ode to Night”
Age 17 – Christina Tricomi, age 17* Poem: “Without Stars”
Age 17 – Laurel Schuster, age 17* Poem: “When”
Age 18 – Elizabeth Pirard, age 18 Poem: “How to Write a Poem”
Best Overall Poem – Marlena Marzigliano, age 16 Poem: “Temptation”
*Due to the # of entries in the age 17 category (73), the judges felt it necessary and more fair to make two selections for “best poem” in that category.
