General News: Village Trustees Discuss Road Conditions, Rock Wall

March 28, 2013

By Joseph Oliveto

On Monday night, March 25, the Cornwall-on-Hudson Board of Trustees met at Village Hall for the monthly Business Meeting.

During the public comment portion of the evening, a resident living on Paula Court expressed concern with the conditions of the roads throughout the village.

“I just don’t get the sense that it’s a real priority, and I think that it should be,” he said.

Mayor Coyne responded, saying that the issue “all boils down to money.” He and David Halvorsen, Superintendent of Public Works, agreed that the village currently does not have the funds needed to do the work that needs to be done.

“I would love to repave every street in the village, if we had the funds to do it,” Mr. Halvorsen said, adding that more work will be done “as soon as the weather turns.”

The Rock Wall Tavern on Academy Avenue was also discussed. Recently there have been complaints of disturbances, and the Board agreed that it will be necessary to increase police presence in the area in order to enforce parking laws.

The owner of The Rock Wall was in attendance and expressed not only her desire to keep unruly patrons out of her establishment, but to cooperate with the village to make sure that no further problems arise.

Concern over the possible effect that the proposed Kiryas Joel Mountainville Pump Station will have on other wells in the area continues. Mayor Coyne mentioned the possibility of a public hearing in the future, though no date was set, to make sure that all voices are heard on this issue.

The Bike & Hike program was approved to continue this year, although those who run the program have proposed limiting the time frame so that the program doesn’t extend into colder months when fewer people will be able to take advantage of it.
