General News: Citizens Attend Public Hearing on Industrial Park

February 11, 2013

 By Joseph Oliveto

Concerned citizens packed Town Hall on Tuesday night, February 5, to attend a public hearing on the condition of the industrial park on Mill Street which suffered a large fire last year. Many in attendance voiced frustration with the fact that little progress has been made in clearing the area and cleaning it up, fearing that it may be a public safety hazard.

“I think it’s a travesty that we’re all here tonight without something happening,” said one speaker, adding, “There needs to be a schedule if this place is going to get cleaned up.”

Another woman echoed these sentiments, saying, “At this point, I’m totally disgusted . . . who knows what’s going into the Moodna now.”

Several people at the public hearing voiced concern over the possibility of children playing in the area, which could result in injury or death.

One speaker, commenting on behalf of the firefighters who responded to the event, said, “Who knows what we inhaled at that scene,” and told the Board that they were being “exceptionally lenient” with the property owners, whose responsibility it is to clear the area.

Some expressed concern over what might happen if the owners sell the property, which could result in the process of cleaning it up being drawn out even further. Although the owners have indicated that they will begin the process of rubble removal on February 25, many were still fearful that this project will continue to take longer to complete.

The fact that no one representing the property owners was in attendance at the meeting was a disappointment to those who showed up, feeling that it was disrespectful to ignore the concerns of the town.

Comments:

This has gotten to be a real joke; do our elected officials care at all for our town and it's citizens, or is it still the almighty under the table dollar. Please do not let one of our neighbors be killed in the next fire there, or the one after that, This is just unfathomable!
