From The Storm King School

On Monday, January 20, Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, The Storm King School community took a day out of their normal routine to participate in a day of service.  Students chose from a varied list of activities. One group led by teacher Taras Ferencevych made fleece blankets for Project Linus (http://www.projectlinus.org/ ), which has provided over 4 million blankets to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need. Up in Black Rock Forest, a team of students worked with their teachers to gather data for an on-going research project. Another group traveled to Montgomery, NY, to the historically African American Cemetery to clear debris.  Teacher Ian Morris said of the experience, "Visiting and clearing the cemetery was a rewarding experience for us.  It helped students connect with the past.  Clearing the graves was a great way of connecting with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the legacy of injustice in our country."

Volunteering at a Habitat for Humanity build was a popular choice. Teacher Kaitlin Nolan said of the experience, “I have never been more proud of our students here at SKS as well as our community as a whole for coming together, uniting for one cause, working hard, and being the best we each could be.” Ms. Nolan’s sentiment was echoed throughout the day. Dean of Students Al Lewis noted, “It was heartwarming to see our whole community, and especially our student body, come together and accomplish so much in a single day.”

Forty-two members of the school and local community donated blood to the New York Blood Center. It was Storm King junior Hannah Forte’s first experience donating blood. She said she was “a little nervous at first, but the nurses with the New York Blood Center helped me calm my nerves. I am really glad I went through with it, and I want to do it again.”

Faculty member Kathleen Minahan summed up the day by saying, “I am proud to be part of a school that recognizes the importance of remembering Dr. King not by spending the day at home but rather by engaging in service. It was inspiring to see our students and faculty come together to work on a variety of projects that, if only in a small way, bettered our community.”

Founded in 1867, The Storm King School is a small college preparatory boarding and day school (coed, grades 8-12/PG) dedicated to the success of each student. Blending the best of traditional educational methods with new and emerging technologies, SKS tailors highly individualized programs to meet the varying needs of each student. At Storm King, students are helped to dream big, work hard and achieve success, each in his or her own way.
