In late 2012, Jen and Seth Soloway transferred management of the Railroad Playhouse, located at 27 S. Water Street in Newburgh, to Just off Broadway, Inc. However, rather than marking the end of the Soloway’s endeavor to expand arts education in the community, this development has represented a positive turning point.

Speaking of the work he and his wife did with the Playhouse, Seth Soloway says, “We’re very proud to have been able to take that building and turn it into an arts venue,” explaining that “a hand-off like this was natural” to the development of the venue.

Thankfully, the Soloways are using this opportunity to only further involve themselves in the artistic life of the surrounding communities. Stating that “The things that made us start the theater were arts education,” Seth Soloway speaks enthusiastically about his involvement in a very unique Cornwall-on-Hudson elementary school production. Soloway is currently helping students at the school produce and stage a play that they wrote themselves. This marks an early step in the Railroad Playhouse’s Classroom Playmaking Project, which aims to “include all local students in the theater and to serve as an option for schools that do not have a regular teacher on staff.”

The educational value of such a program is easy to recognize. The goal is to use “playwriting as a classroom tool to help target New York State Learning Standards.” With educators always looking for interesting ways to reach the goals of their districts, is clearly more than just an extra-curricular diversion for theatrically-inclined students.

In an official press release announcing management transfer occurring at the Railroad Playhouse, Jen and Seth Soloway express their gratitude to the communities of Orange County and the Hudson Valley, assuring everyone that they will continue to be involved in bringing the arts to our region, a sentiment that Seth Soloway reiterates when he states that he is “thrilled to still be involved in the community.”

In times such as these, where budget cuts threaten the future of arts programs in our schools, we’re lucky to have people like the Soloways to make sure that our children and communities don’t lose the opportunities to benefit from arts education.
