Stop DWI:
Neuhaus: Anti-DWI Programs Keep Residents Safe This Holiday
STOP-DWI, Alert Cab prevent drunken driving, save lives

Goshen, NY – County Executive Steve Neuhaus today reminded the public about Orange County’s continued participation in the statewide STOP-DWI program as well as its support for Dana Distributors’ Alert Cab this New Year’s Eve. The Orange County STOP-DWI program funds police agencies, including the county Sheriff’s Office, to provide for sobriety checkpoints and extra patrols to keep roadways safe by collaborating with State Police and municipal departments. Checkpoints are in effect December 12 through Jan 1. Funding is provided by DWI fine money as well as additional grants from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) that are provided to participating counties through the STOP-DWI Foundation.

Dana Distributors offers cab rides free of charge to residents in Rockland, Orange, and Sullivan counties. The rides are available from 4 p.m. December 31 to 2 a.m. New Year’s Day and the destination must be a rider’s home within a 10-mile radius of pickup. The announcement was made today at a public event in the Dana Distributors Conference Center on Hatfield Lane.

“Stay safe this holiday season: If you’re going to drink, don’t drive. Thanks to STOP-DWI high-visibility checkpoints, our law enforcement continues to save lives,” said County Executive Neuhaus. “In addition, the free taxi rides provided by Alert Cab can get you where you need to go, without putting yourself and other drivers at risk.”

For more information on anti-DWI programs, visit www.stopdwi.org/mobileapp. The GTSC and the NYS STOP-DWI Foundation have released a “Have A Plan” mobile app. The app operates on iPhone, Android, and Windows platforms, with features such as an ability to preload a list of designated drivers, find a taxi cab via GPS, an alcohol-impairment estimator, various motor skills tests to assess impairment level, and a “Report DWI” button that connects users to their local 911 service.

Free Coffee at Thruway Rest Stops:

Starting New Year’s Eve, December 31, at 11pm through New Year’s Day at 7am, service area restaurants will be offering free coffee and tea for motorists traveling along the New York State Thruway.

Dana Distributors, a Budweiser beer distributor in Goshen, NY,  has organized the free 'Alert Cab' cab rides in Orange, Rockland and Sullivan counties for over 25 years.
