The tree lighting this year fell on an unseasonably warm night. The ceremonial lighting of the Christmas tree in the village began at 5 pm at the the village bandstand. Mayor Brendan Coyne welcomed the NYMA band who played traditional Christmas music while many children ran around in circles around the tree, some amusing themselves playing ring around the rosy.

When the band finished, the crowd counted down seconds until the tree was lit and sang Christmas Carols. Moments after the tree was lit, Santa Claus came down Hudson Street on the back of the fire truck, making his way to Storm King Engine Co. fire house so he could sit and listen to each child’s request for toys.

Some of the children were half way to the firehouse before Santa arrived. The Incognolis split their group in two, daughter Samantha got to the firehouse quickly to wait on line, saving a spot for her little sister Emma to join the line. The Ladies Auxiliary put out a spread of sweet treats and hot cocoa for the crowd to enjoy. Carly Neville, dressed in a red and white dress with a Santa hat, collected donations for the Hudson Valley SPCA .

Now that the time for the village tree lighting is earlier, it’s possible to make both the village and the town tree lighting ceremonies, even if you wait in line to see Santa at Storm King Fire Engine Co.

The town ceremony was sponsored by the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce. The Cornwall Middle School band, led by Steve Kessler, played holiday songs including Rocking Around the Christmas Tree. They also got to flip the switch this year to light the tree. Mr. Kessler told jokes to the crowd and repeated one so everyone could hear. “What happened to the person who shoplifted (by the way children, don’t shoplift) a calendar at Christmas?” When he said the answer “The answer is he got 12 months!” the crowd erupted with laughter and clapping and one child yelling “Yah!”.

The children lit the tree and Santa came down Quaker Ave. on the fire truck which stopped at the circle. When Santa stepped out of the truck, he was surrounded by his many fans. The children took turns posing for photos with him before he headed into the firehouse.
