General News: Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts

November 09, 2012

By Joseph Oliveto

With many families and individuals in the tri-state area still feeling the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy, local residents may be looking for a way to help out those in need. Thankfully, several organizations are accepting donations to support the victims of Sandy.

The Food Bank of the Hudson Valley, located at 195 Hudson Street in Cornwall-on-Hudson, is urging anyone who can to donate money, which will allow them to send food and supplies to people and places that need them. The Food Bank is also accepting donations of food and other essential supplies that may be needed in the wake of this disaster. They are specifically looking for ready-to-eat meals, hand-held snacks, canned goods, water, nutritional drinks, granola bars, peanut butter and jelly, crackers, tuna fish, and canned fruit. Instructions on how to make a donation specifically for Hurricane Sandy victims can be found at The Food Bank’s website, www.foodbankofhudsonvalley.org.

Christine Peterson is organizing a donation drive:
"Hudson Valley residents have teamed up to collect and deliver trailers of supplies to Hurricane victims in multiple areas of NY and NJ.  Donations for the 3rd delivery are being accepted through this Friday nigh November 9, 2012 t at the River Grill, 40 Front Street, Newburgh, as well as the Cold Spring Fire Company, Main St, Cold Spring." Also see the Event facebook page

On November 11, 2012, A Wish & a Smile will be holding a Sandy Relief Drive at the Cromwell Manor Inn, located at 174 Angola Road in Cornwall. The relief drive, which will be held from 11:00 Am to 5:00 PM, will be collecting seasonal clean clothes, pet supplies, hygiene supplies, diapers, and boxes. As A Wish & a Smile is a charitable organization, tax receipts will be made available. Donations made during this drive will be sent to those in need in the Rockaways.

Sunday November 11, 2012: Girls on the Run of the Hudson Valley will have a donation drive at the Fall Harvest Race. Please drop pff items 8:00AM-11:00AM at the GOTR Table at the Storm King Firehouse 233 Hudson Street in Cornwall-On-Hudson. Items needed: heavy duty garbage bags, flashlights, batteries, work gloves, and face masks. They also need baby food, formula, diapers, wipes, socks, toiletries and first aid supplies.

The Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund, which, according to its official website, has been “established to raise awareness, organize volunteer service efforts, and extend relief to Sandy victims,” also helps those interested in participating in relief efforts by providing news updates, information on how to volunteer, and opportunities to donate. For more information, please visit www.sandyrelief.org.

As always, local residents can also donate to the American Red Cross. Info on how to donate can be found at www.redcross.org.

Although the worst of Hurricane Sandy may seem to be over, there are still many in need. We urge anyone interested in helping to do so.
