General News: Hurricane Sandy Hits Cornwall

November 06, 2012

By Joseph Oliveto

It has been a week since Hurricane Sandy struck, and although there are many victims in regions further south who are still suffering greatly due to the storm, for the most part, life in the Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson area has returned to normal. Much of the damage that could have been sustained as a result of the storm was avoided or minimized thanks to the vigilant efforts of the local government.

Cornwall Town Supervisor Kevin Quigley, when asked to comment on how Cornwall fared during Sandy, said, “As a whole, we did very well throughout the storm.” Although there were some downed trees and branches as a result of the hurricane, as well as snapped poles, Quigley pointed out that the damage to the Cornwall area was not as great as it was during Hurricane Irene. As well, concerns about the town sewer plant, which is on the river and could have sustained damaged that would have required costly repairs, were unfounded, as no water got in the plant.

Luck was not the only factor that benefited Cornwall. Quigley stated that the necessary crews were all out from the beginning of the storm to prepare for it, and were back out to help as soon as it was over. The local government coordinated via conference call with the county to make sure that any problems that arose were immediately addressed.

Quigley said that everyone’s power was restored by the third day after the storm.

While it is nearly impossible to be completely prepared for a hurricane, thanks to hard work on the part of the local government and crews, Cornwall suffered very little as a result of Hurricane Sandy.
