General News: Prepare for the Storm

October 26, 2012

Orange County Residents Urged to Prepare for Impending Storm
Region Expected to Experience Flooding, High Winds from Hurricane Sandy

from Goshen – The Orange County Executive’s Office and the Department of Emergency Services participated in a briefing call this afternoon with the National Weather Service (NOAA) for an update on the latest track of Hurricane Sandy and the potential timing and impact on our region.

At this time, the forecast models show the possibility of at least five inches of rain and sustained winds of 40-50 mph and gusts of 60 – 70 mph affecting the Hudson Valley.

“It’s critical that County residents have an up-to-date family emergency plan in place that includes ample food and water, a battery powered radio, a full tank of gas, and a local map,” said County Executive Edward A. Diana.

The Division of Emergency Management is closely monitoring the storm track and is coordinating with local, state, and federal partners, including local hospitals, airports, and municipalities. The County Executive and Emergency Services personnel coordinated a briefing phone call with municipalities earlier today.

Emergency Services Commissioner Walter Koury reminded residents, ”Protect yourself and your family - please do not drive through standing water or flooded areas, stay away from downed wires, never run generators inside buildings, and avoid entering flooded basements and fast moving water.”

Orange County Emergency Management recommends that County residents stay informed during this emergency by registering at www.nyalert.gov to receive critical public safety information, and consider becoming a fan of Emergency Management’s Facebook page OrangeCounty EmergencyManagement.

For regular news updates and storm preparation information, please visit Orange County’s website at www.orangecountygov.com, residents will also find a link titled Hurricane/Flood Preparedness with more detailed information.

Orange County residents needing assistance with human service needs during the storm, such as shelter information, should call the County Helpline at 211 for information.
