General News: Girls Scouts Bridging Ceremony

The Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson Girl Scout troops held their annual bridging ceremony this Sunday, September 30th at the Girl Scout Cabin in town. Bridging is a special ceremony for Girl Scouts to celebrate their move from one level to the next in scouting.
After a call to order and a flag ceremony, the Daisies, Brownies and Girl Scout Juniors, Seniors and Cadettes gathered to welcome new members into their troops. The members moving to their new level within Girl Scouts marked the milestone of that change by walking across a bridge to their troop leader. They received their new uniform and a pin of their new ranking.
The parents took group photos of the girls and everyone sang the Girl Scout Songs “Make New Friends” and “He's got the whole World in His Hands, Girl Scout Version.” When the singing was finished, the girls participated in S.W.A.P.S. which stands for Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere or Share With A Pal. The origin of S.W.A.P.S. is Native American and based on Potlatch, a ceremonial exchange of gifts.
Swapping promotes friendship between the girls and teaches them about giving and sharing while encouraging them to talk with each other. The girls made handmade small gifts, each with a pin that the receiver can wear as a memento of occasion.
