September 15, 2012

PIPC Hudson River Valley Ramble Events

The Hudson River Valley Ramble celebrates the history, culture and natural resources of the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area, as well as the amazing landscape, communities, and trails throughout the region. What began as a modest event that was held during one weekend in September, has grown in popularity and in numbers over the years. This year, the Ramble takes place over two weekends in September. Every year participation continues to grow. ‘Ramblers’ come not only from the Hudson Valley region and New York State, but from other regions of the country as well to discover the riches our Valley has to offer.

Bear Mountain State Park: September 22nd at 10 AM (Rain date: 9/23)

This hike passes through several scenic historic areas of Bear Mountain State Park including the pre-Revolutionary hamlet of Doodletown, a picturesque lake, and up to a stunning Hudson River vista overlooking the Twin Forts. This 7 mile moderate-strenuous hike includes the panorama offered from Perkins' Peak. While you lunch at the overlook, your guide, local historian Larry Menchini of the Save Washington's Lookout Committee and Bear Mountain State Park, will tell about the British naval strategy. On this adventure, hikers will see one of only three visible shipwrecks in the Hudson, walk on the original 18th century roadbed that connected Revolutionary War forts Montgomery and Clinton, pass an ancient Native American campsite and identify plants, animals, and rocks along the way. Sterling Forest State Park: September 29th at 11 AM
ImageThis hike is designed to be enjoyable, yet challenging to the casual hiker. The Fire Tower Ramble is a 4.0-mile hike that begins at the Visitor Center. Along the first part of the journey, you will see historic ruins of an iron mining venture that existed between 1735 and 1923. The hike picks up the west bank of Sterling Lake for a brief segment, which leads to the Fire Tower Connector Trail. During this phase the hiker will experience a 300-foot rise in elevation eventually merging onto the Fire Tower Trail. This old wood road progresses a further 350 feet in elevation reaching the historic Sterling Tower. Hikers will be able to enjoy a scenic view of the surrounding area from the 60-foot lookout. Leaving the Fire Tower hikers will travel northbound on the Sterling Ridge Trail to the Bare Rock Trail. The Bare Rock Trail will provide an enjoyable descent back to Sterling Lake where hikers will complete the loop back to the Visitors Center. Led by Sterling Park Staff. Bring lunch and water. Call (845) 351-5907 to register or for more information.
