Douglas Land Joins Board of Orange County Land Trust
July 25, 2012

 by Caroline Hamling

Douglas S. Land of Cornwall on Hudson has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Orange County Land Trust; it was announced recently by Marlena Lange, President of the nonprofit conservation organization.
Mr. Land is a long time proponent of land preservation and farmland protection in Orange County.  He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Hudson Highlands Land Trust since 2009, a land trust focusing on protecting land in the Highlands region of Orange and Putnam counties.  As a board member of the Orange County Land Trust, Mr. Land will bring his many years of experience in land protection to the trust, particularly in the areas of fundraising and development, and conservation finance.
A financial and economic consultant since 1981, Mr. Land is Founder and Managing Director of The Chesapeake Group, an investment and merchant banking firm in New York City and Bangalore, India. Mr. Land holds a B.A. in Economics and an M.B.A. and M.A. in International Relations from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.  In addition, he is a member of the Board of Directors of the New York Region Anti-Defamation League and was a member of the Advisory Committee for the Cornwall Master Plan.
“We are delighted to welcome Doug to our Board of Directors,” said Marlena Lange.  “Doug brings to our board a wealth of experience in land protection issues, as well as impressive expertise in the areas of finance, including new and innovative methods in conservation finance. We are very much looking forward to working with him to continue to protect Orange County’s beautiful, natural lands and working farms.”
Mr. Land lives in Cornwall-on-Hudson with his partner, Lynn Peebles.  He enjoys competing in regional and national triathlons and is an avid biker and runner.
Orange County Land Trust has helped protect nearly 4,500 acres of land since its inception in 1993.  Working with landowners, state, municipal and county governments, and other conservation organizations, the trust’s expertise includes the placement of conservation easements, coordination of the purchase of development rights (PDR), and stewardship of conserved lands.  The Land Trust owns and manages ten nature preserves in Orange County, seven that are open to the public, free of charge, for hiking, birding, nature study and other forms of passive recreation.  Two preserves are actively farmed, leased to nearby farmers for hay and corn production.
