General News: Earth Day at the Public Library

April 15, 2012

From the Cornwall Public Library

In honor of Earth Day 2012, Cornwall Public Library will host an “Earth Day Family Event” on Saturday, April 21st from 10 a.m. until Noon. On the docket are stories and presentations that will take place in the library’s program room, then it’s off to the outside to “dig in the dirt” in the library’s Butterfly Garden and flower beds.

Karen LaRocca-Fels, library director, said, “We’re proud to say that our library is very aware of the need for preservation and conservation of our beautiful planet earth, and we work diligently to set an example. Most obvious is the benefit of lending books, magazines and newspapers, giving patrons the opportunity to enjoy their richness without having to purchase them and conserving paper and energy costs that would be needed to produce additional copies. Another huge factor in conserving and recycling is reflected in the used book store operated by FRIENDS of Cornwall Library. Materials are donated, alleviating the need to discard, then purchased at “gentle prices”. Many times buyers will bring those same materials back once they have read or listened to them, to give someone else that same opportunity – and the recycling cycle continues.

In its operations, the library maintains a comprehensive recycling program for paper and containers, identifiable by the large amount of material on their sidewalk on ‘recycling night.’ All toner and ink cartridges for the various copiers and printers in the library are recycled through Toshiba. The back office lights are on sensors, turning lights off if no one is in the office for a period of time. With the addition of a dishwasher to the library’s program room kitchen – a generous donation in memory of long-time library patron, FRIEND of the Library and literacy advocate, Carol Krafft – paper products are no longer used for the library’s programs, significantly reducing the amount of waste and garbage produced.

“Everyone at the library works together toward a common goal of being prudent in use of our earth’s resources,” said Mrs. Fels, “And we are always looking for additional ways in which we can continue this most important initiative.”
