Village residents decided to keep one incumbent, Trustee Jim Kane, for another two years while they chose to let go of another, Trustee Barbara Gosda, in favor of first-time candidate Peter Russell in the village election Monday.

Kane captured 437 votes and Russell took 435 votes. Gosda and running mate Jan Smith took 370 votes and 385 votes respectively. The total vote count was 831 ballots collected, with 66 absentee ballots.

Immediately following the vote, the losing candidates left village hall quietly with their supporters who included Trustee Andrew Argenio, a frequent ally of Trustee Gosda, who has served two terms in office. Inside, the two victorious candidates received congratulations from their families and other village officials. Mayor Brendan Coyne, who had campaigned in favor of Kane and Russell, was elated, saying "there's good news tonight -- yes, yes, yes!"

Mayor Coyne explained that he is glad to have "trustees who are positive and who think into the future rather than be stuck in the past," a comment apparently referring to Trustee Gosda's focus on holding prior adminstrations accountable for the 2006 construction of the DPW building under conditions that have been criticized by the state comptroller's office.

After the vote count, Kane said that he was proud to live in a country where the democratic process comes down to such a local level and thanked all his supporters.

“I’ve enjoyed my first two years as a village trustee and I look forward to getting to work on my next two years,” said Kane.

Russell also thanked all the residents who supported him in his bid for a seat on the village board and said that he hoped to accomplish his goal of bring back feeling of community to the village.

“We have a great community and we (the village board) need to set an example,” said Russell. “It starts with us.”

With the evening firmly theirs, Kane and Russell headed to Painters’ Restaurant with their supporters, among which were Village Mayor Brendan Coyne and Deputy Mayor Mark Edsall, to celebrate the night’s victory.

Comments:

YES! I think the Mayor is correct in saying that "trustees who are positive and who look to the future" are what this Village wants and needs! I am so excited for the next two years in the Village!

Boy - sure love to follow stuff there in Cute Cornwall-on-Hudson. Was surprised the residents didn't pick up on the difference between Kane/ Russell and Gosda/Smith. From afar - sure looks like the boys got back in. Hope Mr. Argenio keeps up trying for true transparency which sure looks like it eludes most of the Trustees. As for Mr. Coyne's dopey statement as to why he was proud - those who don't understand history are doomed to repeat it. Nice that Cornwall which spawned Happy Mr. Larkin still believes that the past was a wonderful thing. Disappointed in you C-on-H.

The registered voters of Cornwall-on-Hudson who did not vote in yesterday's election now have the board of trustees that they deserve.

Unfortunately, the party of more village debt and higher taxes has won. The good old boys are firmly in power and I can feel in my wallet already.

The Voters have Spoken.
I believe all the negativity surrounding the losers played a huge part on their loss. Kane and Russell ran a clean campaign, not one of anonymous posters and skullduggery. One post that was put up was particular uncalled for and as usual unsigned.

Now we have one new Trustee who took the highroad alongside James Kane. It's time for the village to move forward and heal all rifts. I'd ask all trustees to act civil at the board meetings. There is no need for screaming. Above all remember the 3 foot rule. After the meeting ends is not the time to get in ones face and force confrontational behavior. This is uncalled for and I hope it ceases.
