By Nancy Peckenham

A town of Woodbury Democrat announced Tuesday his intention to run for the New York State Assembly seat currently held by Republican Nancy Calhoun.

James Skoufis, who is serving his first term as a town councilman in Woodbury, said that he will also seek the backing of the Working Family Parties and the Independence Party in his first bid for state-wide office.

Skoufis is a 2005 graduate of Monroe-Woodbury High School who was elected to the town council after earning a bachelor’s degree from George Washington University in 2009. He also holds a master’s degree from Columbia University.

In his announcement, Skoufis stressed his opposition to overriding the new tax cap law and his efforts to stop the Kiryas Joel pipeline. He also said he would be a voice for job creation and property tax reform if elected.

The new redistricting lines of the 99th Assembly District have yet to be finalized but a proposalincludes the Towns of Blooming Grove, Chester, Cornwall, Goshen, Hamptonburgh, Highlands, New Windsor, Wawayanda, and Woodbury in Orange County and Stony Point in Rockland County.
