From the Cornwall Public Library

On Friday evening, February 10, ‘after hours’ at the library came to life as more than 75 library volunteers and their guests enjoyed delicious hors d’oeuvres and desserts and mingled with one another at the library’s two-hour “Volunteer Appreciation” party. Specially designed invitations were mailed to 150 teens and adults of all ages who had, during the last year, donated their time to the library. Library staff members prepared and donated the wide array of delicious food, as well as volunteered their time to assist setting up for and running the evening’s event.

Volunteers committed more than 14,000 hours of their time in 2011, according to Karen LaRocca-Fels, Library Director, who described a long list of activities they undertook. “Our volunteers have: helped run the Summer Reading Program; kept our gardens attractive; sorted, organized and straightened our collections; served on the library’s board of trustees and provided leadership and advocacy.” She also said volunteers served on the Friends and Foundation boards and planned fundraising initiatives to support library programs and services; maintained a library scrapbook; helped provide pre-school story times and FURacious Readers Read to Milo; assisted in maintaining and growing our comprehensive local history collection. “Cornwall Public Library could not provide the level of service that we do without our volunteers and their dedicated support,” LaRocca-Fels said.

Youth teamed up with adults to participate in a scavenger hunt that took them throughout the building on a search using library-related clues. A number of raffle prizes donated by local merchants were awarded to lucky ticket-holders. As they left to go home, each attendee was presented with a Valentine’s goodie bag filled with candy hearts, chocolates and other treats.

“People had a terrific time and told us so as they were leaving,” said Mrs. LaRocca-Fels. “We were thrilled to be able to thank them in this small way.”

Comments:

Many thanks to the Library staff for putting this event together and bringing in all the great treats. I enjoyed myself and the the mocha cake was excellent. Bless you all.
