General News: Lions Support Medical Programs

February 18, 2012

From the Cornwall Lions Club

From collecting millions of used glasses to aid the visually impaired in developing counties to conducting no cost eye screenings for preschoolers locally, the Lions have held true to their simple motto "We Serve". To further help those in need the Cornwall Lions are participating two additional health care ventures.

The Hyde Park Lions Club is a local driving force with the Chemo Duck Program. A chemo duck is a 12-inch stuffed therapeutic duck that comes with Port-a-Cath or Hickman Broviac line, a belly button for a feeding tube, an arm immobilizer, it comes with hospital pajamas, and is wearing a bandana.

The duck is a therapy tool to comfort and instruct seriously ill children in a time of exterme stress. Along with the duck an activity book and DVD are also provided. The "I'm Still Me"activity book was written by mental health professionals and given at the time of diagnosis. Children undergoing cancer treatment seem to mature rapidly in learning adult medical terms: vocabulary and they get accustomed to to dealing with nausea, needles, and hair loss. The Chemo duck can undergo treatment first allowing the child to see what to expect thus lowering their stress.

Most of us think of the measles as simply a childhood disease. Virtually all of us "have had our shot". Yet, on average, ever yday 460 people, mostly children die from the disease. Those who do not not lose their life may very well lose their sight, or suffer from brain damage. To help end this global threat, the Lions have been asked to join Measles Initiative. This group is a partnership of leading health organizations committed to the elimination of measles. Despite being regarded as a childhood illness nearly one half of the vaccine preventable deaths among children was caused by Measles. Additionally 90% of those without immunization will quickly contract Measles when exposed to the virus. Beyond giving immunization for Measles the other benefits to communities are; health workers trained, vaccine storage improved, safe injection practices promoted, and follow up care.

The Lions mission is to raise 10 million dollars by the end of June. The Gates Foundation has pledged to give one dollar for every two that the Lions raise. The theme of the campaign is "One Shot-One Life" because that is simply all that is required-one shot. The cost to immunize one child is just one dollar! To help the Lions stop the suffering please send a tax deductible donation to LCIF 300 W22nd St Oak Brook, Il, 60523-8847
