General News: Councilman Proposes Town-Village DPW Site

February 16, 2012

By Nancy Peckenham

Discussion about a 20-acre parcel off Route 32 near the town’s highway department was renewed Monday, when Councilman Randy Clark suggested to his fellow town board members that it could be put to good use by a combined town and village highway department. The property was owned by Lucille Hand, who passed away last year.

Councilman Clark said the town has already had the parcel appraised and should now think about getting partners to purchase it. He mentioned the village and the Mountainville Fire Company as possible partners. “Our highway dept is being squeezed and perhaps we could have a dialogue with the village before they spend more money (on repairing its DPW building," Clark said.

Supervisor Kevin Quigley said he would follow-up with the property owners but noted that the village just this week approved repairs to the DPW and  it may be a reluctant partner.

“We already share manpower and machines. Why not try to consolidate in some way shape or form? They work well together,” Clark said, adding that he would like to follow up on it at the next work session.

Here's a map showing the town of Cornwall Highway Department on Route 32.

Thank You Randy! Here is the solution we can all get behind. No flood plain, No toxic gasses, No sinking into the muck lower costs and better services.

2 days ago Andrew said "Village Trustee Andrew Argenio said he thought abolishing the review board was a step towards consolidation of the town and village." Today he wants to move the village DPW to Mountainville.. Go figure...

THAT is a totally feasible alternative plan.

The 1973 and 2005 engineering reports clearly stated that the spreader footing foundation that was used for the Shore Rd. building was NOT stable to use at the Shore Road site. Please do not forget 4 feet of flooding this past summer. While the storm might have been a large one, the site is right on the Hudson River. There is no logical reason to chance it happening again.

The tax payers need to ask if it is logical to spend another half million dollars in renovations now, when there are clear indications we will have to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars more in upcoming years.

As far as it being a "brand new" building - We sold the Hudson St. facility when it was only 20 years old, and NOTHING was wrong with it - How is this different?
