The Cornwall Volunteer Ambulance Corp held its annual Installation and Awards ceremony Friday night, recognizing the service of members, all volunteers, who responded to nearly 1,000 calls for assistance in 2011.
During the evening’s ceremony COVAC’s CEO Michael Bigg described both the life-saving moments and the routine calls answered by dozens of members who proved that the heart of the ambulance corps depends on those who show up day or night when needed.
There was humor, too, as many of the young volunteers laughed about when Laura Lapre first joined the corps she reported that she just smelled a lot of CO2, the odorless, colorless gas. Lapre was presented with a bouquet of flowers because she is entering the U.S. Army later this month, becoming the fifth member of COVAC to be serving in the military.
Life Saver and Other Awards for Honor
On a more serious note, Life Saver Awards were handed out to Aric Longo, Keven Smith and Mike Saylor for using artificial respiration and aggressive care of a patient having a seizure last January. Chuck Wipplinger, Brian Florio and Kristen Sebesta also received Life Saver Awards for their actions in September caring for an unresponsive woman in her car.
Captain Tiffany Williams received the 2011 Meritorious Service Award for going above and beyond the call of duty when she have rescue breathing to a patient despite blood come from her own forehead after she hit it on a door. Joseph Reardone was honored with the 2011 Chief’s Award for his active involvement in all of COVAC’s activities.
Top Responder Awards were also handed out to the “Lucky 13” responders, with the top spot going to Chris Dietz for responding to 265 calls in 2011. The other 12 top responders were Bob Galvin, Sean Boyle, Keven Smith, Tiffany Williams, Joe Reardon, Gary Melrose, Greg Scharfenberg, Chuck Wipplinger, Harold Green, Charlie Muller, Kristen Sebesta and Nic Bernier.
Kristen Sebesta, COVAC’s Chief of Operation and the organizer of the tribute dinner, also received a special bouquet for all the work she does for the corps.
