Note: The Saturday matinee has been moved to 4 pm due to snow in the weather forecast.

This year, the third- and fourth-grade students in Cornwall Elementary School’s PTO Drama Club are taking the audience on a world tour with an improbable character named Flat Stanley. With plenty of song and dance numbers that will get your toes tapping, the young actors and singers perform with great spirit as they tell the story that ends on a high note of the joys of family life.

The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley, Jr.
is based on the children’s book Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. It’s the tale of a boy, Stanley Lambchop, who wants to travel the worl and do something amazing, something no one's ever seen before. When a group of friends come over for a sleepover, an amazing talking bulletin board appears above Stanley’s bed and when the children awake in the morning, they find Stanley crushed flat under the bulletin board, but otherwise quite well.

With his parents, he ponders what this all means and a doctor finds him fit as can be – just flat. However, his friend Arthur later tries to turn Flat Stanley into a kite and leave him stuck in a tree, providing another chance for Stanley to belt out a song (“In a Tree.”)

A postal carrier then suggests that his flatness would be ideal for traveling through the postal service and before long, Stanley takes off. His first stop is Hollywood where he meets a talent agent, then he is off to Paris to visit an old friend. While in Paris, Stanley uses his flatness to trap an art thief but a letter from home reminds him of his family, whom he begins to miss. However, an offer to appear in a movie being shot in Hawaii gets Flat Stanley moving again.

Once on the tropical island, Flat Stanley realizes the best kind of adventure is any adventure you share with the family you love and he is off again, this time to return back home.

Fourth-grader Michael Colarte plays Stanley with great style as he travels around the world, then returns to his parents, Mr. Lambchop (Bradley Schewtschenko) and
Mrs. Lambchop (Faye Botelho). His friend Arthur is played by Daniel Mulligan, who several times during the performances moves to a keyboard on stage to play brief musical interludes.

Dozens of other talented students join them on stage in groups divided into third- and fourth-grade performers. With tap dancing and other choreography, the chorus members sing and dance with tremendous spirit throughout the show, ending with the grand finale, “Travelin’ Through the Mail,” that brings the full cast on stage.

Director Ann Shatto and musical director Karen Snider have returned for another year of dramatic fun with the elementary students. Denise Carter and Monica Trella assist with the choreography and Cyndee Weiss is in charge of costumes. High school teacher Tony Ravinsky oversees lighting and sound engineers, assisted by an able team of volunteer assistants.

Team leaders of the production, Denise Carter, Nicole Colarte and Trina Miller, summed up the reasons why everyone works so hard to make the show a success. “It was the opportunity to work with intelligent, energetic children who were bursting with personality. We were given the privilege to watch them learn and grow as they worked diligently to be "performance ready,” they write in the show’s program.

The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley Jr. will have three performances open to the public. The first is a full dress rehearsal at 7 pm on Friday, January 20, followed by two performances on Saturday at 2 and 7 pm. All performances are in the auditorium of Cornwall Central High School at 10 Dragon Lane.

Due to the weather, tomorrow's show times were changed. They are scheduled to be performed at 4:00pm and 7:30pm (instead of 1:00pm and 7:00pm). Please come and support our young actors and actresses! You won't be disappointed!
