General News: Congresman Hinchey to Retire

January 18, 2012

Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), who recently completed treatment for colon cancer and has been declared cancer free by his doctors, will announce tomorrow that he will not seek reelection and will retire at the end of his current term in 2012.

Hinchey represents the 22nd District of New York, which runs from Middletown to Kingston. He was first elected to the House in 1992 after 18 years in the New York state Assembly.

Congressman Hinchey's office released the news Wednesday afternoon and said a full announcement will be made by the Congressman on at 1 pm on Thursday, January 19, at the Senate House State Historic Site where he announced his first campaign for Congress in 1992.

On hearing the news, New York State Senator William Larkin (R-Cornwall-on-Hudson), said it has been an honor to work with Hinchey for the past 30 years.

“His commitment and dedication to his constituents and the entire Hudson Valley has always been unparalleled. Maurice and I have always worked well together and I will miss him as a colleague. As a friend, I wish him all the best and a long and healthy retirement,” said Larkin.
