General News: Man Shot By Police in New Windsor

January 14, 2012

By Nancy Peckenham

Authorities have identified an armed man shot by a police officer after a routine traffic stop Saturday morning as Jardell Ward, 24, a resident of New York City.

Ward was shot shortly after 8:30 am after a New Windsor police officer stopped a vehicle with three people inside, one of them a child, on Route 32 near the town’s border with the city of Newburgh.

New Windsor police chief Michael Biasotti and Orange County District Attorney Frank Phillips said in a joint press release that an unidentified New Windsor police officer stopped the car and asked Ward, the front seat passenger, to get out. The officer then found a gun in Ward's waistband and a struggle began.

During this struggle, authorities say, the officer fired two shots from his service weapon and at least one of them struck Ward.. Police say the weapon, which was never fired, was a stolen 9mm Berreta semi-automatic pistol with 15 round sin the magazine and one in the chamber.  Police added that Ward has four active warrants out against him in New York City for felony assault, automobile theft, criminal trespass and jumping bail.

Ward was medivaced to Westchester Medical Center where he is reported to be out of surgery and likely to survive.

For several hours, police say, Ward would not identify himself.

Following standard procedure in a police-involved shooting, Chief Michael Biasotti requested assistance from the New York State Police and the Orange County District Attorney. All three agencies are working jointly on the investigation and request that any member of the public who may have any information contact the New Windsor Police at 845-565-7000.

No criminal charges will be filed until the investigation is completed, authorities say.
