General News: Grant for Wi-Fi at Cancer Center

January 03, 2012

From St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital

St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital (SLCH) received $5,000 from the Forget-U-Cancer Fund, funding to enable Wi-Fi access for patients at Littman Cancer Center’s Infusion Suite.

“We are extremely grateful for this donation from the Forget-U-Cancer Fund,” said Sue Sullivan, SLCH Vice President, Advancement and Government Affairs. “The commitment and caring nature of this organization is truly inspiring to all whom they’ve reached and helped.”

Sullivan and Renee Feenaghty, Director of Cancer Services, accepted the donation on behalf of the hospital. They were joined by Nevill Smythe, Vice President of Programs for Community Foundations of the Hudson Valley, and Melissa DePaolo, founder of the Forget-U-Cancer Fund.

After being diagnosed with cancer in 2004, DePaolo learned to embrace her journey and use her strength and experiences to instill faith in others. Five years later she started the Forget-U-Cancer Fund as a way to raise awareness about the disease, as well as money for researching a cure. Melissa’s infusion treatments at the Littman Cancer Center began in early 2011. Infusion therapy involves the administration of medication through a needle or catheter, and is prescribed when a patient’s condition cannot be treated effectively by oral medications.

“Being a patient of the Littman Cancer Center myself, I know how time consuming the infusion process can be,” said DePaolo, who sometimes experienced 8 hour infusion therapy sessions. “With the newly installed Wi-Fi, patients now have a way to do work and enjoy entertainment while undergoing their life saving therapies.”
