General News: Library to Update Catalogue System

November 29, 2011

From the Cornwall Public Library

On the evening of Sunday, December 4th, after its 6:00 pm. closing, Cornwall Public Library’s online catalog will become unavailable and will remain so through Wednesday evening, December 7th. On Thursday, December 8th, the library’s new circulation software – a program called Symphony developed by SyrsiDynix, Inc. – will go live. Cornwall’s upgrade is part of a system-wide initiative administrated through the Ramapo Catskill Library System (RCLS), of which Cornwall is one of 46 member libraries.

The decision to go with Symphony follows months of research and deliberation by a special committee comprised of member library directors, library circulation staff, and the technology team from RCLS. Three different programs were considered and comprehensively assessed before making the final selection.

The new library catalog will have a different look and feel, and will offer additional searching capabilities. There are a number of great new features, including being able to select the location from which a patron wishes to pick up items through inter-library loan. For anyone using a SmartPhone, the system will be “mobile.” Patrons will receive an automated phone call letting them know when a requested item arrives, meaning they’re likely to be notified more quickly. Of course, e-mail notification is always available if a patron opts for it.

“We are currently involved in extensive training on the Symphony software product, to be ready for the “go live” date of December 8th,” said Karen LaRocca-Fels, Cornwall Public Library Director. “An upgrade of this extent requires knowledgeable staff and the cooperation of our patrons during the transition, and we’re looking forward to being able to offer borrowers greater capabilities and improved features. We’re working hard to make patrons aware of the changes well in advance, and appreciate their anticipated patience.”

Anyone with questions about Symphony or the transition is invited to contact Ms. LaRocca-Fels at the library: 534-8282, ext. 201, or via e-mail at [email protected].
