General News: Will Cornwall Become a Community That Cares?
November 27, 2006
Is Cornwall ready to become a “community that cares?” That is the question to be asked on Tuesday evening when community members meet to talk about whether they are willing to take action to provide a better safety net for local youth.
In a letter addressed to local residents, Ruthie Bowles, a community prevention coordinator with the Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Council of Orange County, invites people to come to the Village Hall on Tuesday, November 28, at 7:00 p.m. to vote whether to move ahead with a strategic plan for the community.
Communities That Care is a community-wide youth-development and prevention planning effort that has a proven track record in other towns, including Highland Falls.
At meetings with local residents in September and October many people expressed frustration with young people hanging out on the streets of the village and town. Some said they had been cursed at or offended by the behavior of young people. The issue of skateboarders trespassing on school property was mentioned again and again.
People who want to get involved are being offered this opportunity, Bowles said, to create a local solution using tested strategies of community building. It will take sustained involvement, Bowles warns, and that is what will be measured by the vote on Tuesday.
