An early-morning chimney fire damaged two floors of a Cherry Avenue residence Monday.
Crews from Storm King Engine Company #2 responded to the fire at 22 Cherry Avenue shortly before 7:00 am. According to Fire Chief Jeff Armitage, when the crews got there flames were coming out if the front wall of the house.
Trucks from the Town of Cornwall, Town of Highlands, West Point and Vails Gate lined Cherry Avenue as firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze. At one point, firefighters tore off a section of siding from the front of the home, exposing the old brick structure of the building and hosing it down to prevent the fire from reigniting
The fire damaged the first floor as well as burning the outside of the house, Armitage said. The first and second floors were also damaged by smoke and water. No injuries were reported.
Two residents were home when the fire broke out. Edda Quinn and her daughter, Rae, were sleeping when a neighbor, Joe Board, banged on the front door around 6:30 am to warn them of the fire. Board had seen the fire spreading up the front of the house and ran to warn whoever was inside to get out.
Eda Quinn said that they had been using the fireplace to heat the house since the village lost power during the snowstorm Saturday.
The Quinns had the fireplace going until 9 pm the previous night, according to Armitage. The pair had thought the fire was completely out and went to bed. However, the chimney was in bad condition and some of the brick and mortar gave way in the course of the night, which allowed the smoldering fire to ignite the wall.
