General News: Brazilian Culture Focus of Movie, Talk

On Thursday, October 20th, Foreign Film Night at Cornwall Public Library will feature a showing of 2 Filhos de Francisco (2 Sons of Francisco) followed by a discussion led by Lt. Col. Carlos Cinelli, Professor of Portuguese, USMA at West Point, and Maria Luiza Cinelli, Ph.D., an author and educator. The movie showing will begin at 5:30 p.m.

2 Filhos de Francisco is the success story of a hugely popular Brazilian music duo, Zezé di Camargo & Luciano, multi-million sellers of hit songs of Sertanejo, pop country music of Brazil.

Lt. Col. Cinelli is a Brazilian Army Officer (Infantry Branch) who joined the Army in 1985 and has 26 years of active duty. Among several other assignments, he worked as an instructor in the Brazilian Captains School, and in the Army Command and Staff College where he had been teaching Strategy and Law of Armed Conflicts for the past two years. Lt. Col. Cinelli took part as a platoon leader in the Angola UN Mission (1996) and attended the U.S. Infantry Captains Course (Fort Benning, GA). He also worked as Intelligence Advisor for the Army Commander Cabinet. He is currently assigned to West Point where he teaches the Portuguese Language.

Maria Luiza Cinelli has an undergraduate degree in history, a masters in social science (ethnography) from the Rural Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and a Ph.D. in education (Everyday Life Studies) from the Rio de Janeiro State University. She worked for 12 years teaching history of basic education, and has been teaching at the universities in Brazil since 2003. She is currently Assistant Professor on Methodology, Curriculum and Teachers Training at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro State, and Visiting Professor at the British Columbia University in Canada. She is the author of several articles and books published in the area of education.
