General News: Residents Eligible for Hurricane Lee Relief

October 06, 2011

Orange County was designated eligible to receive Individual Assistance (IA) funding from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help County residents recover from the effects of the recent flooding caused by Tropical Storm Lee.

“This latest designation, in addition to the Public Assistance that was granted to Orange last week, will go a long way in helping the people of the County of Orange, recover from Lee’s debilitating effects on our lives,” said County Executive Diana. “I want to thank our state and federal partners who have worked hard on our behalf to ensure Orange County received these designations.”

To apply for Individual Assistance, including temporary housing, housing repair, low-interest disaster loans from the Small Business Administration (SBA), disaster unemployment assistance and grants, Orange County residents affected by Tropical Storm Lee are being directed to submit an application with FEMA at the County’s Disaster Recovery Center, Orange County Fire Training Center, 9 Training Center Lane, New Hampton, NY 10953 from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, Monday – Saturday, until further notice.

FEMA strongly recommends that people seeking assistance from Tropical Storm Lee register with them as soon as possible by calling the FEMA Helpline 1-800-621-3362 toll-free from 7 am – 10 pm. For those with speech or hearing disabilities, use the TTY number at 800-462-7585. Applicants may also register at www.DisasterAssistance.gov online or with any web-enabled mobile device or Smartphone at m.fema.gov. Follow the link to “apply online for federal assistance.”

Specialists from the Small Business Administration (SBA) will also be available at the Disaster Recovery Center to explain the low-interest loan packages available to individuals, non-profits, and businesses of any size. These loans are for the repair or replacement of real estate and/or personal property damaged by the storm and related flooding.
