For the second time in a month, a film crew has taken over a section of the city of Newburgh for the production of an independent feature film. In early August, a crew shooting the film The Brass Teapot staged a wild car ride up Broadway to Lake St., then back around via Washington and Ann Streets.

On Wednesday, a large crew from the independent production Greetings from Tim Buckley filmed a scene on Broadway. Passersby say they saw the main actors, a young male and a female, holding hands and walking down the street. The crew returned on Thursday to Liberty Street, where the set designers could be seen transforming the exterior of the Terrace Tavern to look like a bar from years gone by. Across the street, the parking lot was filled with trailers used by actors and crew to rest and prepare for their scenes.

No one on location wanted to talk about the movie, which tells the story of Jeff Buckley, a folksinger who first gained national attention with a stunning 1991 performance honoring his deceased father, Tim Buckley, a phenomenal musician who emerged on the folk scene in the 1960s. In the film, Jeff Buckley meets a girl and goes on a four-day odyssey with her that helps him understand his father, who had abandoned Jeff’s mother before he was born.

Actor Penn Badgley, who played Dan Humphrey on the WB television series Gossip Girl, landed the leading role of Jeff Buckley. His love interest is played by Imogen Poots, who recently starred in Cary Fukunaga’s Jane Eyre. The film is a production of Smuggler Films.

The filming set-up generated a lot of interest among residents of Liberty Street, many of whom drove by slowly to see what was going on. Some rolled down their windows and asked if the could be in the picture. A food tent was erected outside Cafe Macchiatto where co-owner Barbara Ballrini was busy preparing 10 iced lattes to go for the film crew. Barbara said that while some of her regular customers didn’t have a place to park and apparently stayed away for lunch that day, she felt that the presence of the crew was beneficial overall to the city.
