The summer of 2009 promises to be a time when visitors flock to the Hudson Valley during the Quadricentennial that will commemorate the explorations of Henry Hudson and Samuel de Champlain in 1609, as well as the 200th anniversary of Robert Fulton’s first steamship voyage along the Hudson River.

Celebration plans are being laid across New York by a commission created by Governor Pataki in 2002. Now, village residents Deke Hazirjian and Lee Murphy want to help Cornwall play a significant part in the events along the Hudson River.

On Monday night, the village board of trustees voted to appoint Hazirjian and Murphy to co-chair a joint village-town committee to explore how to get involved.

“We want to ensure that Cornwall is well represented in the activities of 2009,” says Lee Murphy. “We think it is essential that Cornwall be represented in all of the committees being formed.”

Hazirjian, a professional lighting designer well-known locally for his dramatic lighting of historic Bannerman’s Island, also serves as president of the Local Development Corporation. Murphy is the chair of the Village Master Plan Committee.
