The annual Storm King Fireman’s fair started at 6 pm Wednesday behind Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary School and by 6:30 pm the fair’s midway was already bustling.

Kids crowded near the Demon Loop, one of the newer rides, trying to build up the nerve to take a ride where they’d be swung around like a broken clock pendulum. Along with the new addition were old favorites like the Swings, and the Round Up, a ride the uses centrifugal force to hold riders against the wall of the ride and eventually lifts the passengers into the air.

There were some thrills for the younger kids in the crowd. A roller coaster for the little kids called The Orient Express rolled kids over small hills and around corners in dragon- shaped cars. There was also a small Ferris wheel as well as the fun house and other children’s rides.

All along the fair’s midway people played game like tossing darts for a chance to win posters, or tossing ping pong balls into tiny fish bowls to win pet gold fish.

Volunteer fire fighter from Storm King Engine Company #2 gave dismantled a car as part of a demonstration of how they rescue passengers who become trapped in their vehicle after an accident.

There was even entertainment Wednesday evening for people not interested in the lights and noise of the fair. Up the street from the elementary school at the bandstand, the West Point Jazz Knights Combo played for a large crowd.

The fair runs through Saturday, July 23 and will end with a fireworks display.  Click here for the full schedule.
