General News: Village Expands Residency Requirements

July 19, 2011

By Charlie B. Scirbona

The village of Cornwall-on-Hudson’s building inspector no longer has to live in the village to hold the position.

The village board of trustees voted Monday to amend the public officers law for the village to allow the building inspector to live anywhere in Orange county or an adjoining county as long as it’s no farther than 30 miles from a border of the village.

The need to amend the law arose last year when the board of trustees began to discuss the fact that former village building inspector Bruce Yancewicz lived in Montgomery. At the time the position could only be held by a village resident. Yancewicz resigned in December, citing the residency requirement. Since his resignation, the position has remained unfilled. In March, a temporary inter-municipal agreement with the town for building inspector services was agreed on.

The board interviewed candidates to fill the position permanentlyMonday night, but no decision has been made.
