General News: Bridge Repair Project Moves Forward

The town of Cornwall took another step ahead in its plans to create a pocket park on the closed stone bridge on Bridge Street. On Monday, the town board approved hiring a surveyor to assess how work on a drainage system would impact the adjoining properties owned by Clark and Associates and Hazard Pharmacy.

The stone bridge that was built in 1871 has been closed to vehicle traffic since 2007, after the Department of Transportation found leaks and crumbling walls that created a potential hazard.

A couple of years ago, the town commissioned plans for a pedestrian park on the site just off Main Street, with benches and a view of Canterbury Creek, which flows underneath the stone arch.

The trouble with the plan is that the deteriorating walls cannot be repaired until the drainage system that runs underneath is repaired and re-routed. That’s why the board voted on Monday to get the ball rolling on the project.

Comments:

Tear the bridge down and be done with it. This town and Village have more parks than they know what to do with, and though "benches with a view of Canterbury Creek" and a brick-paved pocket park are very cute and mini-Paris, they don't seem to be a priority right now.

It could be a great place for out door eating if there were a eatery near by or was built over the creek. But you're right it's not a priority right now.

Main Street needs all the help and beautification it can get. Moving forward to understand how to save the bridge is exactly the right step. We should preserve the history that makes Cornwall special.

A priority: enhance Main St., the businesses and Cornwall in general, fight the black top and the malls, preserve a bit of serenity and good taste.

It's a nice plan. A shame that the economy is such that funds for these sorts of projects are more and more scarce or earmarked for more pressing things.

Having infrastructure like this proposed pocket park in place can sometimes help drive development of businesses rather than the other way around.

The cost of preserving and enhancing the bridge for pocket-park use might well be less than the cost of demolishing it. Lets wait for the cost review before making any judgement. I'd rather see it as an asset to the community rather than a liability.

Main Street can use all the help we can give it. A park may help to bring in new businesses and maybe Marybeth can get a grant to cover the cost...

how about additional parking for main street and put the benches back in the village where they used to be so that everyone (even those 10-85s) can enjoy the serenity and beauty of the main drag?

This is a priority for the Town of Cornwall? Every time I ride through, I feel depressed to see all the empty buildings, where thriving businesses used to be. One of the big problems is the lack of parking and the narrow street. The priority should be to create parking and an atmosphere to attract businesses to Main Street, to make people want to come to Cornwall to shop. Possibly, Main Street could be made into a walking mall and traffic diverted to the side streets that could be inproved. Ohter towns have done this. Let's get Cornwall businesses filled and solve the parking problems before we go wasting tax payer funds on a another park.

Main Street also needs more street trees. That's something that is relatively inexpensive to do, but can have a profound effect on the atmosphere of a small business corridor like Main Street.

Trees raise property values and lower temperatures on the sidewalks. Drought and pollution resistant species with non-invasive root systems are relatively easy and inexpensive to maintain.

This is a great low cost, high impact (sort of) idea for Main Street. The cost of demolishing the bridge will be much higher than creating a park here. The plan is a good start but I would encourage the town to emphasize a variety of uses for the area other than merely being a park. Keep the space flexible. Temporary seasonal events like the Lions Club Christmas wreath sale or farm stands in the summer would be a really effective revitalizer for Main Street businesses.
