General News: Residents Concerned About Possible Scam

June 29, 2011

Several Cornwall residents are reporting that a young magazine salesman was going door-to-door in town this past weekend, asking people to support his AAU baseball team by buying a magazine subscription to be sent to U.S. troops. In some cases, the young man referred to a popular local Little League director, Paul Merola, who he said is raising money to take a baseball team to Hawaii. When Merola heard about this, he called police and started to spread the word to let people know that he is not the involved in any magazine sales.

“I am not the coach Merola,” he said in a phone interview.

One local resident purchased a magazine subscription that he thought would be sent to a soldier in Afghanistan. When he later spoke with Merola and found out that he was not involved, he went online to search for the magazine company, Absolute Marketing of Buford Georgia, and found several reports accusing it of fraud. The resident, who is not being identified, cancelled his check before it could be cashed.

Cornwall police chief Todd Hazard confirmed that his department did receive a complaint on Saturday and stopped the magazine salesman for questioning. The man did not have a solicitation permit and officers advised him that he needed to get one in order to sell anything from door-to-door.

“If somebody comes to your door soliciting ask to see their permit,” Chief Hazard said. “If they don’t have one, call (police) right away.”

Comments:

While this purported scam is unseemly and should be stopped, let us hope that scouts in uniform soliciting for popcorn sales (Boy Scouts) or cookies (Girl Scouts) won't face permit interrogations!
