A Dodge Durango driven by a 17-year-old Cornwall woman collided with a tanker truck on Route 32 near Orrs Mills Road Thursday afternoon, causing the truck to flip on its side and the Route 32 to be closed off, according to Town of Cornwall Police Chief Todd Hazard. Some 500 gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel spilled in the accident.

Hazard said the woman was making a left turn onto Route 32 from Orrs Mills Road in front of the oncoming tanker when the tanker hit it, struck a guardrail then overturned around 3:40 pm. Both the driver of the truck and car were taken to St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital for minor injuries, Hazard said.

The Town of Cornwall Police Department was assisted at the scene by the New York State Police, the Town of New Windsor Police Department, the New York State Environmental Conservation Police, Vails Gate Fire Department, Cornwall Fire Department, Mountainville Engine Company, the Stewart Air National Guard Fire Department, Orange County HAZMAT, the NYS Department of Transportation, NYS DEC spill response, the Cornwall Volunteer Ambulance Corps and New Windsor Paramedics.

Hazard said the tanker had to be drilled out and drained into another truck before it was removed from the road way. As of 8:40 pm, Route 32 was still closed to all traffic.

While the road is closed Hazard said northbound traffic is being diverted to Quaker Avenue and southbound traffic is being turn back toward Five Corners.

Comments:

I am sure you were not at the scene of this ACCIDENT, because if you were, you would have seen there was nothing DELIBERATE about it. Teenagers do not DELIBERATELY total their parents' car and risk losing their lives. Your comment was thoughtless and insensitive

Like I said, you obviously were not at the accident or on scene shortly after. Unless you have first hand information that she "caused a crash", you should really curb your opinion. Two teenagers almost lost their lives that afternoon at a dangerous intersection. Maybe you could funnel the energy you have for the blame game and channel into a letter to our State Senator and Assemblywoman about putting a light at that intersection. Now that would be productive!

Actually, most States call them motor vehicle "crashes" vs. MVA. Florida for example even calls the form a crash report. The reason for this is the assignment off fault. Someone or something caused the crash. Maybe it wasen't deliberate, but I'll bet the farm that someone failed to yield the right of way and should be cited appropriately
