General News: Village Will Save With Energy Efficient Lighting

June 24, 2011

By Charlie B. Scirbona

The village of Cornwall-on-Hudson is trying to become more energy efficient.

Village Trustee James Kane reported on the progress of a free energy audit done by Central Hudson at Monday’s board meeting. The point of the audit was to show where village buildings, like Village Hall, could become energy efficient in its lighting. Kane said the audit is free of charge, as is whatever lighting that gets replaced.

Kane said that most  of the village’s buildings had been inspected by an auditor from Central Hudson. He explained that by going with energy efficient lighting the Village Hall could stand to save around $1,100 a year in utility bills. Another building that stood to save a decent amount is the Department of Public Works build. The auditor found that energy efficient lighting would save the village $4,000 a year.

While the DPW building remains closed, Kane said the funds for improving the building will be available to use when the building is deemed safe to occupy.

The only building left to be inspected by the auditor is the museum. Once that is complete, Kane said, whatever changes that will be made will happen sometime around August or September.

Comments:

While were talking about Central Hudson.... I believe the Village and the Town pay CH for street lighting on a monthly basis -- (I KNOW it's part of our tax bills)Yet so many street lights are unlit and in need of servicing -- If we are paying for these street lights -- shouldn't we be getting what we pay for???

I believe it was about a year ago that I first posted on "Click It and Fix It" the fact that the streetlight near our house on Grandview was malfunctioning--going from full on to barely lit constantly. Still hasn't been fixed.

and while we are trying to save money...I think I read garbage fees to us are going up...do we really need two times a week pick up...especially in the winter when things freeze.
