Cornwall’s Aisling Cuffe set another record this weekend, breaking the national high school record in the two-mile in the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, N.C. Cuffe finished the race in 9:54:22, breaking the previous record of 10:01:08 that had been held for nine years.

This race was the last one that the Cornwall High School senior will run as a high school athlete. She is set to attend Stanford University in the fall. Before that she is expected to compete in the IAAF World Youth Championships in Lille, France, from July 6-10.

According to an IAFF account of the two-mile race, Cuffe took the race out hard from the gun, but at 800 metres, the field had strung out to single file and a surprise leader emerged: Kayla Beattie. Cuffe was a few steps behind Beattie when they passed the mile at 4:58:8, then she began inching closer and closer to the leader.

Coming down the homestretch minutes later, fans began a slow clap, which instantly churned the fire even more for Cuffe, according to the IAFF story.

"I knew I had to go then, even though I was sacrificing my leg speed," Cuffe said post-race. She began to break away from Beattie soon after, and crossed the finish in 9:54.22.

"It's my last individual high school race, and I guess I am happy it ended that way," said the Stanford University-bound senior, who represented the USA at the IAAF World Junior Cross Country Championships this past March. "It hasn't really sunken in yet."
