General News: Village Considers Second Police Shift

June 17, 2011

By Charlie B. Scirbona

The village of Cornwall-on-Hudson police department is asking for an extra shift this summer.

During the village board of trustees work session Monday, village police officer John Pena asked the board to consider adding an overlapping shift from 6 pm to 2 am on Thursday, Friday and Saturday during the months of July and August.

Pena said that kids on summer break and the new sports bar opening in the village contribute to the need for a second officer. When the board asked about the new shift’s patrols, Pena said while the officer on duty could patrol in a police cruiser, the second could possibly be on foot or on a bicycle. He added that an overlapping shift would also help curb any problems with drug sales in the village.

This proposed overlapping shift was once a year-round shift, however it was cut out of the budget as a cost saving measure a few years ago.

When I was a part-time Police Officer, I, very often, worked 8PM to 4 AM on weekends. Those are the hours when "things happen." I like 8 to 4 better than 6 to 2 (bars close at 3AM)---but, I agree with Officer Penas proposal.
