General News: Historical Markers Proposed for Village

June 15, 2011

By Charlie B. Scirbona

The Cornwall Historical Society is hoping to add historical markers to plots of land around the village.

Former village historian Colette Fulton spoke at the village Board of Trustees work session Monday about the idea. Fulton explained that as people develop or renovate buildings in the village the historical significance of the site has the potential to be lost. She pointed to the proposed development in the Homeland area as well as the Seaman’s chapel at the Cornwall Yacht Club.

Fulton said that there is already a state law that says markers should be placed on any historic site being renovated. Trustee mark Edsall added this was true but said that there was no means of collecting money for the markers.

The historical society’s plan would be to use money from the required building permit fee to pay for the markers. Mayor Brendan Coyne said he was interested in the idea, but asked Fulton to do research to see if other nearby towns have done this and how.
