General News: Cornwall Police Officers Honored

A car on fire that led to two arrests for arson. An investigation that led to the discovery of a marijuana field. A burglary investigation that tied the suspect to another similar crime in New Windsor. The execution of a search warrant that resulted in seizing heroin worth more than two million dollars. And a life-saving response to a resident in severe respiratory distress.

These are the five incidents that led to honors for seven Cornwall police officers. Cornwall police chief Todd Hazard recognized their service on Monday in front of the town board.

Here’s what the officers did to receive their awards:

Excellent Police Duty
Sergeant Steven Dixon


On the 12th day of June, 2010, Sgt. Dixon responded to the report of a vehicle fire and conducted a criminal investigation into the fire which led to the arrest of the owner of the vehicle and an accomplice for the crime of Arson in the third degree.


Honorable Mention
Police Officer Stephen Bedetti*


On the 9th day of August 2010 Officer Bedetti developed information on an illegal marijuana-growing operation which led to the discovery and eradication of over 500 pounds of marijuana that was being grown in the Cornwall and New Windsor area.

On the 28th day of August 2010, these officers executed a search warrant at a Cornwall residence that resulted in the seizure of two kilos of heroin that had a street value over two million dollars and the apprehension of nine individuals who were using the residence to package the heroine for distribution.

Police Officer Stephen Bedetti*


On the 17th day of September 2010 , Officer Bedetti responded to the scene of a residential burglary that had occurred in the past and started a criminal investigation which led to the arrest of individual who had committed this burglary and a burglary that had occurred in the Town of New Windsor. The continued investigation led to the arrest of a second individual who had proceeds of the burglary in her possession and the successful recovery of the proceeds of the burglary.


Life Saving Award
Sergeant Philip Sinagra


On the 25th day of October 2010, Sgt. Sinagra responded to a medical call where he found the patient to be in severe respiratory distress, high grade fever and tachycardia, realizing that the patient was possibly going into shock administered oxygen and calmed the patient down until EMS arrived on the scene.



*Police Officer Stephen Bedetti also received an award from the Orange County Police Chiefs’ Association.
