Matt Begbie is a graduating senior at Cornwall Central High School and even though he had the lead role in the spring musical “Guys and Dolls” he isn’t ready to say goodbye to his time of the school stage. Since elementary school, Begbie has loved the theater and he convinced his fellow drama club members, many of whom he has worked with for years now, to take part in one final production.

Begbie wrote the play that will be presented for just two performance this Friday and Saturday at the high school. It’s called Whining and Dining and it’’s set on the Upper East Side of New York City, in the home of Ms. Marcy Malliger, a wealthy socialite who lives in a gaudy mansion on 5th Ave.

Many familiar faces appear in the production: David Ransbottom as Gerald, Shona Ford as Sarah, Alyssa Marino as Malliger, Jessica Hauserman as Janice Evans,Ryan Wenke as Bethany, Matthew Begbie as James, Robert Flitsch as Charles Cambin, Samantha Johnson as Winifred Cambin and Anthony Zanin and Charles Boucher as Cops.

Begbie said that he wrote the original play for his fellow actors he has come to know so well at school. He started writing in the middle of the night and created one character, then another and thought up a creative encounter that flowed out of the character’s personas.

Several students pitched in to build the sparse set, with Steve Fowler serving as head set designer. He worked with a volunteer stage and lighting crew made up of Victoria Dewsnap, Brandon Santulli, Kristen Hoerup, Corrie Rickets, Cassandra Vondrak, Pamela Williams, Olivia McGuire, Tim McGuire, Julia McGuire, Tony Ravinsky and Dan Zayas.

English teacher Linda Chastain supervised the play rehearsal and helped round up additional volunteers, including members of the Gay-Straight Alliance.

Whining and Dining will be performed at 7 pm on Friday, June 3 and at 1 pm on Saturday, June 4, in the Cornwall High School auditorium. Tickets are available at showtime and all proceeds will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
