General News: AIsling Cuffe Named Grand Marshall of Parade

June 02, 2011

From the Cornwall Independence Day Committee

The Cornwall Independence Day Committee is pleased to announce that star runner Aisling Cuffe will be the 2011 grand marshal of the Fourth of July parade.

Her acceptance of the honor did come with a condition, however.

Before agreeing to be grand marshal, Cuffe asked if she could do so and still run in the Main Street Mile, which immediately precedes the parade. Upon being assured that the committee would be happy to pick her from the end of the race and dash her off to the head of the parade on time, she said yes. She has won the race three years in a row.

Cuffe is the best high school girls distance runner in the country, winning virtually every race she enters, from the Hudson Valley to California and everyplace in between. She has been an ambassador for Cornwall Central High School, the Town of Cornwall and the Village of Cornwall-on-Hudson, where she lives. She is an inspiration to young and old, with over 2,000 fans following her career on Facebook.

The 17-year-old, five-foot-four senior has maintained an A average throughout high school and belongs to the National Honor Society. She will be off to Stanford University on an athletic scholarship in the fall.

She is the daughter of Ronald Cuffe, a cardiologist, and Marie O’Hanrahan, a native of County Roscommon, Ireland. She has a sister, Dara, who is also a runner, and a brother Conor.
